Christopher Columbus set his sights to the New World on October 12, 1492. Columbus knew in his heart the world was round. Unfortunately, he thought the diameter was smaller than it is and landed on San Salvador and continued to explore Hispaniola and Cuba on his first voyage when he thought he’d reached Asia. You can read his impressions of the land and its people. You’ll also find his letter to Ferdinand and Isabella in which he laid out his ideas for the colonization of this new territory.
