Christoper Columbus set his sights to the New World on October 12, 1492. He knew in his heart the world was round. When first calculating he thought its diameter was smaller than it is, so he landed on San Salvador and continued to explore Hispaniola and Cuba. During this first voyage he thought he’d reached Asia. You can read his impressions of the land and its people, whom he initially held in high regard. You’ll also find his letter to Ferdinand and Isabella in which he laid out his ideas for the colonization of this new territory.
