Prologue Magazine is a quarterly published by the National Archives and
Records, filled with stories based on  information in regional archives and the
Presidential libraries. This story talks about the discovery in 2006 of one of the
ships on the Great Lakes
that brought trees into Chicago and
other ports on Lake Michigan to sell as Christmas trees.  Not only do you learn
about shipping on the Great Lakes and the Christmas tree ships in general, you
will also find out about one of the great captains, Herman Schuenemann, and the
ship wreck that cost him his life.  This little slice of American history brings
to life real people that you seldom find out about in reading American history
text books.

By now Christmas lights are adorning buildings and trees, both inside and out.
How did this use of electric Christmas lights begin and how did the sale of
these little twinkling reminders of the holiday season become a commercial
success?  Read a brief history of this much safer alternative to
the use of candles to illuminate indoor Christmas trees.  You’ll find pictures
of early Christmas light sets, the first National Christmas Tree, and a
photograph of the Capitol Christmas Tree in 2000, with a link to information
about earlier Capitol Christmas Trees and the tradition of having a tree at the
Capitol in addition to the more famous tree near the White House. - Tech and Learning

This has got to be the cutest site for young folks.  If you have a little one at home that is in the early learning division, load The Color for them this evening.  No need to search the site, I've got the Valentine's Day page preloaded for you.  All they'll need help with is bringing up the picture.  But then again, you know those little ones, show them once, and they'll have five pages colored before you return!  They are just too keen to this computer thing.  This page allows the student to click and place color easily bringing immediate self-esteem.  So go ahead, get dinner started, or finish that last task while your little one enjoys this.

When the day is done, kick back and enjoy the Many Faces of Valentine at the virtual museum in Canada.  This has to be the most comprehensive site offering tidbits of Greek Mythology, original Valentine's Day cards, and a brief glimpse of how this day of love evolved to its pinnacle platform of today.

"On February 14, tokens of love and affection are exchanged
throughout North America and parts of Europe. Children give
Valentines to their classmates and couples express their affection
for each other with cards, candies, flowers and other gifts. Valentine's
Day celebrates friendship, romantic love and marriage. The origin
of this feast leads us back to the life of a Christian saint and
an ancient Roman festival. Exploring the meaning of this feast leads
us into a landscape of story and a world of delight in the love
and affection human beings have for each other." - Virtual Museum of Canada.

Enjoy! And, while you're there, send an ecard!

How Christmas Works

2. Good questions:Let's say that on December 20 you were to meet a friendly space alien. That is, let's say that his space ship discreetly drops him off in your back yard while you are looking out your window. You walk outside to meet the visitor, and you find out he's a pretty nice guy. His name is Gorg, he is wearing a costume that makes him look passably human, he speaks reasonable English, and he explains that his goal is to spend a week on the planet to learn about its people. He asks if you would consider being his guide for the week, and you decide to take on the job. So you take Gorg around and start showing him your town. Since it is December 20, one thing is for sure -- Gorg is going to ask about Christmas. And he is going to ask a LOT of questions, because Christmas is a pretty complicated.  What do you say?
